Boquete: Panama’s Picturesque Mountain Retreat

Adjusting to a new temporary home in Panama, courtesy of my wife’s work, we’ve been eager to explore what this diverse country has to offer. Our very first escapade? A 7-hour journey to Boquete, a name that kept popping up whenever we asked locals for travel recommendations. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

A Chilly Welcome to Mountain Living

Boquete is this fascinating blend of ski town vibes—minus the snow—and Panamanian charm, nestled up in the mountains where the air gets a bit crisp, especially in the evenings. It’s a stark contrast to the tropical warmth we’d grown accustomed to in Panama City, but a welcome change that reminded us of autumn back home.

The Heart of Boquete: Its Flower Festival

Arriving during their annual flower festival was like stepping into a postcard. The town was alive with music, food stands, and, of course, flowers everywhere. It’s an event that draws both locals and tourists, showcasing the natural beauty and cultural vibrancy of Boquete. The atmosphere was electric, a celebration of community and nature intertwined, and we found ourselves swept up in the festivities, enjoying local dishes and the melodies of Panamanian music.

A Stay at a Hidden Gem

Our accommodations for the weekend were courtesy of a friend’s small finca, a place so serene and beautiful it felt like stumbling upon a secret spot that only the luckiest travelers get to experience. Picture waking up to the sound of birds, with views that make you want to pinch yourself to make sure you’re not dreaming. It was one of those places you'd expect to find with a "hidden gems of Airbnb" tag attached.

Exploring Boquete’s Charms

The town itself is a treasure trove of quaint shops, parks, and eateries, each with its own story. We spent our days meandering through the streets, discovering local handicrafts and indulging in the culinary delights of Boquete. The parks offered a peaceful retreat, with lush greenery and blooming flowers that seemed to decorate every corner.

The Journey Back: A Traffic Tale

Now, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The return trip to Panama City introduced us to a less enjoyable aspect of traveling in Panama: the traffic. What was supposed to be a 7-hour drive turned into 9, thanks to congestion. While it was a minor setback in what was an otherwise perfect weekend, it’s a reminder that sometimes, the journey back can test your patience.

Would We Recommend Boquete? Absolutely

For anyone finding themselves in Panama and looking for an escape that offers both beauty and a bit of chill, Boquete is a must-visit. It’s a place that seems to capture the hearts of everyone who visits, expats and travelers alike. Just maybe give yourself some buffer time for the trip back if you’re on a tight schedule.

Our temporary stay in Panama is already shaping up to be an adventure filled with discoveries, and Boquete has set the bar high for what’s to come. If you’ve visited Boquete or have other Panamanian hidden gems to share, drop a comment below. Let’s keep exploring together.
